Now that fair weather has come to Madison for the summer, I have been taking advantage of our proximity to the Southwest Commuter Trail and biking into work as much as possible. Often the first activity of the morning @0700 is a meeting or conference of some sort, and as the week progresses and fatigue builds, getting to these on time becomes more and more of a challenge. This reality is a particular problem for the Thursday morning Cardiothoracic Conference, which is held on the far side of the UW hospital (about as far from my office in the VA as one can get) and whose main content has often been delivered with in the first fifteen minutes of the conference.

So for the past couple of weeks, I've parked my bike at the UW instead of the VA on Thursdays and gone to conference in my biking clothes. Typically the conference is attended only by the staff of the Cardiothoracic department, many of whom show up in their surgical scrubs, so it never struck me as a particularly formal event. Nonetheless, as I passed my primary supervising surgeon on my way out of the hospital on Thursday wearing my bicycling clothes, he offered a hearty guffaw and offered "Dude, at least throw some scrubs on before conference next time." I replied "Well, okay, if you think it would make folks more comfortable." He replied seriously but with his nearly omnipresent wry smirk "I think it would make people more comfortable."

How curious that my bear legs would be so distracting for room full of people who make their living by cutting open living human bodies...
I would have voted for Bill Richardson for president had he still been campaigning for the post by the time the Wisconsin primary rolled around. Today I feel confirmed in the vote that I did cast. The cynics may accuse Richardson of angling for the VP post in making his endorsement, and while I think his decision to endorse Barack Obama is much more layered than that, if it lands him on the ticket I will be one very politically pleased sasquatch indeed.
